What to Expect During Your Newborn Photoshoot

There’s something incredibly special about photographing newborn babies(usually 1–6 weeks old). They’re still so tiny. Still so curly. Still brand new to the world.

And honestly? They grow way too fast.

One minute they fit perfectly in the crook of your arm… the next they’re outgrowing everything and discovering their voice. That’s why a newborn photoshoot isn’t just about pretty pictures — it’s about freezing a fleeting season before it quietly slips by.

If you’re wondering what actually happens during a newborn session, here’s a relaxed walk-through so you know exactly what to expect.

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photoshoot

A little preparation goes a long way — but don’t worry, it’s simple. Here’s how to help things flow smoothly:

  • Try to keep your baby awake for a short time before leaving home. Babies often fall asleep in the car on the way to the studio, which is hard to avoid, but a little awake time beforehand helps them settle into a deeper sleep during the session.

  • Plan to feed your baby when you arrive. A full tummy helps baby relax and fall into a nice sleepy state for the photos.

  • Take a moment to settle in when you arrive. You’ll have time to feed, cuddle, and comfort your baby before we begin, and throughout the session if needed.

  • Choose your preferred wrap colour from our wide range of soft wraps available in a beautiful variety of colours.

I have a comfortable sitting area for parents, so you can relax while we gently settle your little one.

How I Safely Pose Your Newborn

Safety and comfort are always the priority. Every pose is gentle, natural and carefully supported. With over 15 years specialising in newborn photography, safe handling and baby-led posing are at the heart of every session.

I also work with an assistant during newborn sessions so there is always an extra set of eyes — and often hands — close to your baby. This allows us to safely support and spot baby while I focus on capturing the image.

Nothing is ever forced or rushed, and if baby isn’t comfortable in a position we simply move on to another pose. Here are the poses we typically include:

  • Wrapped up on a soft blanket

  • Wrapped in a basket

  • Close-ups of tiny fingers and toes

  • Close-up portraits of their face

  • Lying on their back on a soft blanket

  • Lying on their tummy (always safely positioned)

Everything is calm, warm and cosy — designed to help babies feel secure.

What if my baby won’t settle?

Let’s be real — babies aren’t always perfectly sleepy and cooperative, and that’s completely normal. While the photos may show a calm, peaceful baby, that may just a moment I’ve captured between the wriggles, yawns, and little cries. No matter your baby’s temperament on the day, I can still capture beautiful, timeless images.

Ways we can comfort your baby during the session:

  • Soft white noise and gentle shushing

  • Silicone pacifiers (optional)

  • Gentle rocking, patting or bouncing

  • Milk top-ups whenever needed

Your baby leads the pace. Always.

Can We Include Family Photos?

Absolutely. Newborn sessions aren’t just about baby — they’re about connection. I usually photograph:

  • Mum and baby

  • Dad and baby

  • Family photos

  • Sibling photos (I also do individual photos of your older children)

  • If there are older children we will also photograph them with mum and dad (time permitting)

When you book, I’ll provide clothing suggestions to keep everything cohesive and timeless. Family images are often the images clients treasure the most.

You’re also very welcome to include/bring:

  • The family dog

  • Cultural wraps

  • Korowai

  • Special jewellery or sentimental keepsake

These personal touches add personality and meaning to your images, creating photos that your family will treasure for years to come.

What Happens After the Photoshoot?

Once your session is complete:

  • I will do a basic edit across a range of images

  • You have a relaxed photo viewing session either 30 minutes after your photoshoot or via zoom at another time

  • You select your favourites

  • I complete detailed finishing edits on your chosen images

  • I will print any images your have selected to print. These can be collected from studio or courier is an option for certain products.

This ensures you receive beautifully refined photos you’ll be proud to display
